Slappy Cakes, which offers make-your-own pancakes in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Oregon and our own Maui, has up to recently had very unusual business hours. Though their locations come equipped with full bars serving a wide variety of cocktails, the location in Honokowai was only open for breakfast and lunch. Those wanting to to make their own pancakes (with a wide variety of batters–including vegan–and fix-ins) for dinner or even in late night hours had to settle for IHOP or, in the worst case, their own homes.
Now that’s changed. “We are excited to announce our new nighttime menu, available 5:30-8:30pm every Friday-Sunday,” stated a Slappy Cakes press release from owner/founder Adam Fuderer I just received. “Come join us for dinner with a Slappy twist featuring pupus, salads, sandwiches and plate specials. ‘Breakfast for dinner’ items are also available, and you can still make your own pancakes (as slappetizers or dessert) all night. We also have a new drink menu with wine, beer and new mixed drinks.”
In addition to the new burgers, salads and sandwiches on the dinner menu, there are pupus like “Buffalo Fire Fries,” “Steak Poke Rice Bowl,” “Poke Tacos” and the ever-popular “Country Fried Bacon.”
Though good news, I couldn’t help but wonder why Slappy Cakes wasn’t going all the way and remaining open for the Westside’s late night crowd who I’d think would die for a chance to get pancakes and booze after the big resorts have shut down.
“We are testing the waters for now, if dinner is successful this month we will expand our days and hours,” Fuderer emailed me.
