This goes out to the young couple trying to hitch a ride on the corner of Dickenson and Highway 30 the other morning. How dare you give me the finger for not stopping to pick you up! I don’t owe you a ride. In fact, I don’t owe you anything—I don’t even know you, just as you don’t know anything about me. I pick up hitchhikers quite frequently, but I guess it just wasn’t your lucky day. Did you ever think that maybe it just wasn’t possible for me to give you a ride that morning? Maybe I had groceries covering my seats, leaving no place for you to sit. Maybe I was picking up a bunch of friends to go surfing. Or maybe I had an overprotective dog in the back seat that doesn’t take to strangers. Even if none of these scenarios were true, I’m a single woman: I don’t EVER have to pick up hitchhikers. It’s my right and everyone else’s right to say “no” to people asking for a ride.
