I was born and raised in Haiku. I love being a server. I wish I had known about it sooner! I have worked here since it opened about three years, four months ago. I was working as the manager of Sbarro pizza in the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center when Kirk, the owner of this Ruby’s, offered me a job. I had never been a server before but it had so much less stress than the other job, that I chose to be a server full time.
I’m also the floor supervisor so when I’m working, if there is an incident with an unsatisfied customer or something like that, then I handle it. I try to multi-task. I work in the mornings and in the afternoon from about 5:30 a.m. to three in the afternoon. In the morning I do things like count the bank and make coffee, various things so the managers can cruise when they come in.
I’ve also just been hired as a ticket agent for Aloha Airlines. A friend of mine has recently moved to the mainland and I was concerned about how I would afford to go see him. Another friend who had been hired at Aloha told me that I should apply because you obviously get good deals on plane tickets. I’m really happy about my new job and the opportunity. I will be working both jobs full time—Ruby’s in the day and Aloha Airlines at night.
I really respect the management at Ruby’s. It’s the first job that I’ve had where the managers work with you and you’re not just working for them. They would never ask you to do something that they would not do. The people who come in are also great.
I’ve had a lot of job opportunities. I have a real estate license and commercial driver’s license but I chose to stay at Ruby’s. Ruby’s has sort of been my growing up point. Before, I could never understand how other people could pay their bills and rent and still have enough money to eat. I owe Ruby’s for that. They are my moneymaker. MTW
