One thing funny about my work is my quirk gets in the way. I’m a little anal retentive, as some coworkers say. I’m obsessed with small details, like if little things are out of place. If the work computer is moved even a little to the left or something, I’ll notice and it’ll bug me. And at Buzz’s we’ve got different colored straws. In my customers’ drinks, I like the straws to be all the same color. That’s why I have to garnish my own drinks. I want them perfect, I want them beautiful. I get made fun of because of it. They’ll say, “don’t touch those drinks, they’re Darla’s.”
I moved here two and a half years ago from Grass Valley, near Lake Tahoe. I love Maui. I love everything about Maui. It has the same relaxed ways as where I grew up. It’s got that small town feel where if your car breaks down and you pop your hood, suddenly you’ve got five people to help you out. The people here are friendly, helpful.
I also love to ride my bike all over the island. I used to ride from Wailuku to Ma’alaea when I worked days. It was awesome but I got scared because I almost got hit a couple times. Drivers here are in a hurry, sometimes driving too fast. That’s why I like biking, too. You notice things and can appreciate things that you can’t do when whizzing by in a car.
I love my job, too. It’s made me love fish. Back home we didn’t have fresh fish like here. I guess you could say I’m expanding my horizons with fresh fish and seafood. I always recommend our Tahitian Prawns. They’re the best. We’ve got a lot of regular customers that come in here all the time. I think because the food is great, the service is great and we’ve got excellent whale watching. MTW
