This year’s Turkey Trot for Fun was another repeat success, as runners from around the island and world challenged themselves to accurately guess their race times. 113 registered runners sprinted off the starting line early Thanksgiving morning, and over $1000 was raised to benefit Maui’s Food Bank. In addition to entry fees, 254lbs of canned […]
The first film ever copyrighted was a five-second clip called Fred Ott’s Sneeze. And that’s all it was: a grainy image of a guy (Fred Ott, an employee of inventor Thomas Edison) sneezing. That was 1894. Flash forward 116 years and movie magic has advanced to a point–IMAX, 3-D, high-def home theater systems–that would have […]
Zac Efron – Shining Star Award (Wednesday, June 16, 8pm, Celestial Cinema) Depending on whether you’re a preteen girl or everybody else, your response to this one will likely be, “OMG! OMG! OMG!” or, “huh?” Not to disparage Efron; he’s clearly good at what he does–being a likable, inoffensive teen idol, lucrative Disney marketing tool […]

The Taste of Wailea was the Who’s Who of Wailea fine dining in this sell out signature event at the Maui Film Festival. The participating restaurants included Ruth Chris, Mala Ocean Tavern, Monkeypod (@petermerriman), Matteo’s, Gannon’s (@bevgannonmaui), Joe’s, Bistro Molokini (@grandwailea), Four Seasons (@FSMaui), Pita Paradise Wailea, Capische?, Spago (@FSMaui), Mulligan’s on the Blue, and Ko (@fairmontkealani). The menu was incredible–seafood, lamb, beef, pork, pasta, salad, Greek, asian, Italian, American and desserts, if its delicious it was here. (to see the menu check this earlier post) These tasting dishes were artfully plated, hearty, refined, and plentiful. I tried to get to every booth but it simply wasn’t possible.
How should I know what blooms outside the beer garden? There might once have been a time when I knew, but that was many Blue Moons ago. Because from the moment I plant a kiss on the lip of a glass, I’m locked in until the world spins…

As surfer’s pray for waves on Maui during the winter, a select few ask for the gut-wrenching 30-plus foot walls of water that only Jaws on the North shore can provide. You may have seen surfers towed into the massive breaks behind a jet ski, but there is a group of riders that will only […]
