I love the spaciousness of this joint–the wonderful open-air feeling, even when all the doors and shut up for a night’s concert (like the Voodoo Glow Skulls on Saturday, September 19th). The screens that line the top of the bar loop a mix of surf videos and underwater scenes, branded with the Oceans logo. Though […]
Despite all of the dreary economic indicators for Maui county plenty of restaurateurs decided to give it a go. After all, everyone must eat! I say bravo to the brave food and beverage entrepreneurs whose spirits weren’t dampened by locations that have yet to hold a successful eatery despite other attempts, or the daunting liquor […]
The term Supper Club has a colorful history. Its a social destination, its classy cocktails, upscale dining, and on-stage entertainment. In the 1930’s & 40’s some went underground to become prohibition clubs. At least on Maui cocktails are legal thanks to the LC and Stella Blues’ Supper Club is rockin’.
The whole romantic valentine’s day dinner scene changes when you have kids. Fine dining is not an option with my rambunctious four year old. So this year’s valentine’s day I took the path of least resistance and found a restaurant the kids will love and invited some friend to with children to have a fun adult evening with.
Wow what a gorgeous morning! Its going to be smoking hot for the Whale Day Parade today. Sunscreen required. My daughter is already excited for when people the parade throw candy. Growing up vegetarian with very little access to beef, my mom used to tell me how hard it was for her to give up cheeseburgers, it was her favorite red meat food. Since she had given up this worldly delight she expected me to, so it wasnt till later and with much guilt to overcome that I came into my own obsession with burgers.
You can’t be a bartender in Hawaii with out knowing the Mai Tai. While some may despise the drink, others are willing to turn it into a creative outlet which I bore witness to at last week’s Mai Tai Mix Off preliminary competition at the Royal Lahaina. Ten bartenders went head to head in five seven minute rounds with their own personal recipes. The top three competitors will get a place at the Second Annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival held on August 14 at the Royal Kona Resort.
To the local boys skating in the park in Kihei: WTF? My friend: New-to-the-island haole kid trying to fit in. You: Six guys claiming my friend stole your bike. Dude, he bought that bike for $300, and it was his only ride to and from work. I heard you’ve gotten away with this before; one […]
Everyone in the restaurant industry is talking about locavore dining but how can we move this initiative into our own kitchens? Finding fresh Maui grown fruits and vegetables can get tricky since not all places you buy these products from label their origins.
I had to learn the hard way that not all farmers markets are created equal. Just because they have the word “farmers” in the title doesn’t mean the farms in question are on-island or even in the state. If you’re not sure, and it’s not labeled, you can always ask. Another way to tell
Greek salad, the foundation to building a fantastic dinner. the greens were so crisp and all the flavors go together so well. Salty olives, red onion, plenty of feta, chopped tomato and cuke, all lightly dressed. Their garlic bread is crispy, warm, buttery. Irrisistable, carb goodness. It is the yin to the salad. Their veggie […]
Is it just me or is Indian food as rare on this island as a hot, 30-something bachelor with a job? As a native born Indian, who recently moved to Maui, I was determined to find the best spots for authentic Indian cuisine. I was surprised to discover that in a place like Maui, where […]
