Big companies often use their power to say things in public, but sometimes they get cagey and exercise their power by not saying things and then watching everyone get jittery and scatter. That’s the case wit this week’s announcement from Japanese railway giant Seibu that they’re selling Makena Resort. What that means for the giant development plans pending before the Maui County Council—to say nothing of the company’s existing Maui Prince Hotel—is impossible to say. The Sept. 22 Maui News ran an article showing how everyone from the ILWU people to the slow growth organization Maui Tomorrow are going nuts trying to figure out the ramifications of the impending sale, but it’s a pretty safe bet that whoever buys Makena Resort will want some serious condo and hotel construction.
