The recent deal between the state and Young Brothers over “less than container load” shipping at Kahului Harbor is great news for the proposed Superferry and thus great news for Maui Land & Pine, one of its principle financial backers. The Maui News pummeled the proposed high-speed auto ferry line for weeks with a series of articles on how much space the big boats would take at the harbor—space Young Brothers was using for packing containers. Opposition built against the project based on the idea that the state Department of Transportation was just ramming their ferry—currently spending huge money on radio and newspaper ads—into our harbor without any planning or environmental assessment. But now the deal, which looks like it will hold, sinks a sizeable chunk of that opposition. MTW
