Man, the GMO makers just aren’t getting any respect these days. Monsanto isn’t apparently growing genetically modified corn to make experimental drugs, but they’re still taking heat over it. In mid-August U.S. District Judge Michael Seabright ruled that the federal Department of Agriculture exhibited “utter disregard” for both the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act by allowing companies like Monsanto plant all sorts of GMO crops throughout the state without any environmental review of potential crop contamination that could potentially endanger the entire—and extremely delicate—Hawaiian ecosystem. Monsanto and other GMO-makers may have many friends in the White House and Congress expediting permits for them and so forth, but for the time being, the courts are still insisting that things like environmental laws are important.
