Hawaiian Telcom moves way up the chart this week after person or
persons unknown accidentally cut a single fiber optic cable near
Olowalu, obliterating phone service—landline as well as some
cellular—across the entire Westside for eight hours on July 24. The
loss deprived restaurants and stores of the ability to do credit card
transactions, throwing the whole region into chaos and costing local
companies tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. The cut also
interrupted emergency 911 service, potentially putting residents in
jeopardy. “It almost felt like we had to string cans together,” Maui PD
Captain Charles Hirata told The Maui News. “We felt kind of
vulnerable.” One cut on one cable did all that. Now that’s power. MTW
