Tesoro drops a notch this week on news, reported in the July 13 Honolulu Advertiser, that the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers are throwing a fit over the state’s recent decision to waive volatility standards for the gasoline refiner’s ethanol fuel. It’s shocking, but the automaker groups are concerned that with lower standards, Tesoro could produce low-grade ethanol that would cause “driveability problems.” Bad news, certainly, but there’s good news for A&B: its subsidiary Matson Navigation just got the keys to a brand-new containership, the MV Maunalei! In fact, that ship is so good that Matson President James Andrasick told the Advertiser that ships like these give the company the confidence “to enter China, the most significant and largest export market in the world.” You mean we can get even more cheap imports from China now and drive up our trade deficit even further? Fantastic! MTW
