Though not party to the University of Hawai’i’s decision to drop three genetically modified taro patents, the pro-Hawaiian culture, anti-GMO decision will bring enough bad publicity to the biotech industry to drop mighty Monsanto a notch or two. Even more impressive, Tesoro moves way up this week on word that one of its storage tanks caught fire on Oahu. This fire shows Tesoro Hawai’i’s amazing power and influence, because it threatens the state’s sole—that is, only—provider of liquid asphalt. Back in April, when the company ran out of liquid asphalt, the state didn’t do repair work that month. Now, according to a state transportation official quoted in the June 14 Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the state only had enough asphalt on hand to do road paving work through June 16. After that, “we’ll wait and see,” he said. MTW
