Calling her the “Hawaiian Heartbreaker,” The Hill–a trusted source of daily Capitol Hill news for Washington politicos–has named Hawaii’s Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard the sixth most beautiful person in Washington, according to their new “50 Most Beautiful People” feature. Julie McClain, Hawaii Democratic Senator Brian Schatz’s press secretary, also made the list. Ranked 37th, she earned the title “Sunny Side.”
The feature is meant to be fun, said Hugo Gurdon, The Hill‘s editor in chief, in a July 31 news release:
“For the last ten years, we’ve enjoyed letting our hair down in showcasing people who, some high-profile, some not so, most importantly have great personal stories to tell. We’re extraordinarily proud to mark a decade of what’s become a mainstay for DC and political enthusiasts, and look forward to ten more years.”
Most of the write-up on Gabbard focused on her relative youth and Hawaii National Guard service, but a portion also dealt with her love for Hawaii:
“Gabbard was born in Leloaloa, American Samoa, but moved to Hawaii when she was 2 and has called it home ever since. ‘It is truly special because of the culture and the people. I cherish every time I can go home,’ she said. Her favorite way to decompress there: surfing. ‘If I’m home for the district work week, there are at least two mornings during the week I paddle out and go surfing for a few hours,’ she said.”
Gabbard’s office had no comment on The Hill‘s list. As for McClain, her ranking on the list is the least of her concerns.
“The Hill contacted me in June to let me know that I had been nominated by a friend and asked me to participate in a photo shoot,” McClain said in a July 31 email. “I had just gone to the emergency room and been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 3 days earlier.”
McClain added that she’s undergoing treatment now, and her prognosis is good.
