WHO GAVE: Maui Land & Pineapple Company
WHO RECEIVED: Maui County Councilman Danny Mateo
DATE: Oct. 13, 2004
AMOUNT: $250
Hawaii Superferry, Inc. is proceeding as though nothing will stop
their beginning inter-island service this summer. It looks like the
Maui County Council has other plans. On Jan. 26, 2007 Councilman Danny
Mateo wrote his colleagues asking that a committee immediately
undertake “discussion and action” on the proposed Superferry since
everyone is still pretty much in the dark as to how the big boats are
going to affect our islands. “[A]bsent an environmental impact study,
the County has not received specific indications on what plans, if any,
were made to address impacts to the County’s core services, namely
emergency response and police,” Mateo wrote. “Furthermore, a referral
of this matter to an appropriate committee will invite discussion on
any changes in the harbor lawsuit proceedings relating to this matter.”
It’s tempting to say that Maui Land—one of the Superferry’s biggest
sponsors—needs to start writing checks again to a certain county
councilman. In any case, the check highlighted above—the last one Mateo
cashed from the company—came a few months after Maui Land poured $1
million into the Superferry.
