The Haiku Community Association is working to re-open the Kalakupua Playground at 4th Marine Park (Giggle Hill) and it needs your help. HCA will hold a general meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Haiku Community Center to discuss what is needed to make the playground safe and operative for our community’s keiki.
The playground was closed nearly two years ago because the materials making up the play structure had deteriorated, causing safety concerns. Maui City Council has voted to advance HCA $75,000 of its grant money to make the needed repairs which include replacing the swings, cleaning and sealing the mosaics, refurbishing the mirrors and removing rubbish and dirt. Plans to get the playground up to standards include helping the octopus sparkle, helping the tree stand out and painting and sealing the structure.
During the meeting, HCA will field questions and then break into groups to support the Playground Committee and/or take on aspects of the project such as those listed above. But the key to finishing the project is volunteer participation.
HCA is urging community members to volunteer, whether it’s only for a few hours or a dedicated month. Volunteers who are interested can also join the committee itself, which is in need of a secretary, a fundraiser, and a “construction mom or dad” to help organize many of the little things that need to be done to return the playground to its full glory.
As the project progresses, HCA will also need a volunteer coordinator to organize ongoing maintenance of the playground.
During the meeting, HCA will also discuss plans for an additional Paia Bypass and a Haiku Welcome Sign, to be located on the Hana Highway.
The HCA general meeting begins at 6:30pm. Call 808-268-7913 or visit Haikumaui.org for more information.
