As we hit the peak of summer, an abundance of rare silversword plants are blooming at Haleakala National Park. “Long term residents and park staff say this is one of the best years they’ve seen for flowers up here,” said Superintendent Natalie Gates in a July 29 press release. “We hope neighbors and visitors alike will come enjoy this incredible sight.”
Gates stressed the importance of keeping these plants safe because they are not found anywhere else in the world. “The easiest thing we can all do to help these threatened plants is to stay on the trails so we don’t crush existing roots or new seedlings,” Gates said.
Visitors can see the silverswords at the summit, at the Kalahaku Overlook or on one of the 4-6 mile hikes on the Sliding Sands Trail, which leads into the summit basin.
