Watching whales from the shoreline will have a unique spin this year—and you can win a prize. Starting now through mid-May, Pacific Whale Foundation will have trained naturalists stationed at key points along Maui’s coastline to help nature enthusiasts locate and learn about whales from the shore.
During a visit to PWF’s Naturalist Stations, whale lovers will discover hands-on exploration with marine models, artifacts and binoculars. You will learn interesting insights into Maui’s geography, natural history and unique ecosystem. And you will hear facilitating facts about whales and other marine life that would not be available without a naturalist on hand.
The naturalists will be handing out “Trail of the Whale” certificates, which can be stamped for prizes at each of the four stations: the Papawai Point scenic overlook off of Honoapi’ilani Highway; on the oceanfront path in front of Wailea Marriott; at the path in front of Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in Ka’anapali; and at PWF Coral Reef Information Station at Ulua Beach in Wailea.
“The trail of the whale is a great, family-friendly way to enjoy Maui’s unique ocean environment right from shore,” said Conservation Specialist Kelly Montenero in a Dec. 18 PWF press release. “There’s something to be discovered at each station and a fun reward if you visit them all.”
Trail of the Whale Certificates can be picked up from the PWF Ocean Store or at any point along the trail. Once you collect all four stamps, the certificates can be redeemed for a free prize (by April 15) at PWF’s Ocean Store on Front Street in Lahaina or at the Ma’alaea Harbor Shops. Prizes include postcards, magnets and kids’ hats.
