Don’t bother going to Ho`okipa Beach Park today–the County of Maui just closed it. Here’s the press release I just received from Maui County Communications Director Rod Antone:
High surf of about 20 to 30 feet forced the closure of Hookipa Park today. Lifeguards assigned to the park have been assigned to other beaches for the day and will reevaluate the situation tomorrow morning. Surf is expected to get bigger as the day goes on, and likely come crashing over the park’s beachwall and into the pavilion areas as they have during past high surf days. Mahalo for your assistance.
