Haleakala National Park is celebrating the kick-off of a national public awareness and education campaign celebrating the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Haleakala joins parks, programs and partners across the country to launch the FindYourPark.com website, marking the milestone Park Service anniversary in 2016
“A park can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride,” according to the official Find Your Park video. The campaign highlights historical, urban and cultural parks, as well as parks and programs that protect, preserve and share nature, like Haleakala.
In addition, the Park Service is encouraging visitors to share their stories via the new website–spreading nature, culture and history to communities nationwide.
“Find Your Park” is also the theme for this year’s National Park Week, which runs April 18–26. What’s more, all national parks will waive entrance fees April 18-19. During the week, Haleakala officials encourage you explore the park from the Summit to Kipahulu, discovering unique plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else on earth.
A highlight the week will be the April 19 pilot testing of new Junior Ranger booklet of activities. Dubbed Junior Ranger Day at Haleakala, kids who complete one new activity will receive a sticker; kids who complete three activities will get a Junior Ranger badge. The booklet will be improved and revised as needed based on feedback. The final booklet will be published this summer.
Throughout the week, visitors can play national park trivia games in all park visitor centers and participate in daily talks, hikes, and cultural demonstrations. Activities will be posted at all visitor centers.
“We encourage local residents, families and visitors to visit and help us launch this exciting centennial campaign,” said Superintendent Natalie Gates. “These are your parks. We want you to enjoy them.”
