So for those of you lucky enough not to work on Monday, Jan. 19, you’ll be happy to know that Haleakala National Park will be waiving entrance fees that day in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“We honor Dr. King and the tremendous impact of his life and teachings on the world,” said National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis in a Jan. 14 park news release. “He moved hearts and minds through his words and actions. And his vision continues to inspire us to make positive changes in our communities.”
Just remember that if you visit Kipahulu, that district is currently without potable water, so you need to bring your own.
If you can’t make it to the park, perhaps you’ll take the time to comment on the National Park’s new “Foundation Document“–a brief report that “defines Haleakala National Park’s core mission and significance, most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell the park’s important stories,” according to a Jan. 16 park news release. Park officials would really like the public’s feedback on the document, and will give you until Feb. 20 to get your comments to them (click here to view an overview of the document).
The news release also outlined some upcoming public hearings on the document. The first happens on Wednesday, Jan 21, at Kula Community Center the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani from 5-6:30 pm. The second takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 5-6:30 pm at Helene Hall a location to be announced in Hana.
