The Maui Mall in Kahului has teamed up with motivated teachers to recognize the hard work Maui County students are doing at their Family Sundays monthly event. Once a month, teachers are encouraged to nominate their outstanding students even through the summer when school is not in session, and the big winners get iPads and iPods.
“This free educational event will highlight the fun aspects of learning as well as recognize our county’s wonderful students,” says Michael Johnson, the Maui Mall manager.
Each month the mall has a theme to their Sunday event, like science and agriculture featured in May that had the Maui Astronomy Club, Maui Home Gardening Support Network and the Maui Gold Pineapple Company involved. In June the event theme dealt with activities surrounding home economics, culinary arts, nutrition and wood shop. In the upcoming July 29 Family Sunday, the theme will be music and performing arts.
Students must demonstrate proficiency in GPA, test scores and contributions to class and community. If their nomination is chosen a letter is sent to their family and all the nominated students are invited on stage to be recognized.
Every student recognized on stage gets a Maui Mall prize pack with gift certificates in it. One lucky iPad winner is drawn from the grades 6-12 division, and one iPod winner is drawn from the K-5 division. Maui Mall and sponsoring merchants Fun Factory and Whole Foods generously provide the iPads and iPods.
All Maui county students are eligible and teachers can find forms online at mauimall.com. Nominations will be taken through Monday, July 16 for the July event. Teachers are asked to nominate one student per event.
Every student recognized at the events during the year will be entered in the grand finale drawing on Jan. 6, 2013 for a chance to win a MacBook Pro. Students and their guardians must be present to win.
