Thursday, July 10 was the deadline for Hawaii candidates running in the August Primary Election to get their first campaign finance disclosure forms over to the state Campaign Spending Commission. According to the filings, which cover Jan. 1 through June 30 of this year, there is a little more than $359,000 in the collective coffers of the six people running for Mayor of Maui County.
Though there are six candidates–Alan Arakawa, Beau Hawkes, Alana Kay, Orion Kopelman, Tamara Paltin and Nelson Waikiki–approximately 99.5 percent of that money belongs to a single candidate: incumbent Mayor Arakawa.
That’s a pretty stunning number, but it doesn’t mean the race is already over. Sometimes, big money candidates–even incumbents–lose. In fact, Arakawa lost his reelection race back during his first term as Maui County Mayor.
To help you out, there’s going to be a candidate forum this Tuesday night at the Seabury Hall dining room. It’s sponsored by the Haiku, Kula, Makawao and Pukalani Community Associations.
All six candidates will be there; Mahina Martin, Dick Mayer and Victor Reyes will moderate. The forum starts at 7pm and runs to 8:30pm. If you can’t make it, Akaku Channel 55 will carry it live.
Oh, and you can read the latest campaign finance filings for all Hawaii candidates here.
