Quick, think of everything you know about Hawaiian seabirds. If you’re like me and can only recall that one time you saw that bird at the beach which was, like, totally hanging motionless in the sky, maybe now’s the time to bone up.
The Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project is giving residents just that opportunity on Tuesday, April 9. From 6-8pm the Recovery Project will be presenting a lecture about Hawaiian seabird identification, natural history and conservation at the NOAA Humpback Whale Sanctuary Conference Room at 726 S. Kihei Rd.. The presentation is open to the public.
Imagine how impressed your friends will be when you correctly identify the endangered ‘ua‘u and share its history as a Polynesian delicacy, or how it was hunted near extinction through the use of fires meant to disorient and ground the birds.
