Just a couple hours after embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned amidst bipartisan calls that he step down, Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard announced that she would host a “Veterans Listening Tour” throughout the state to find out what veterans need. On Thursday, that tour will stop on Maui.
“The listening sessions are open to the public,” stated a May 30 press release sent out by Gabbard’s office. “Veterans, servicemembers, and their families are invited to share their ideas, concerns, and personal experiences pertaining to the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Pacific Islands Health Care System. The congresswoman will also answer questions and take in individual casework to serve the needs of Hawaiʻi veterans.”
Gabbard, who is also a captain in the Hawaii National Guard, has been outspoken on issues related to veterans, including access to health care, long wait times and unusually high suicide rates.
The Maui portion of Gabbard’s tour will take place at 5:30pm at Pomaikai Elementary School Cafeteria (4560 S. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului).
