Looks like Governor Neil Abercrombie has gone and done something right. Or rather, he went and did not do something right. Specifically, join with 40 other governors to declare today, Feb. 6, “Ronald Reagan Day.”
To be helpful, this Daily Caller story lists all 50 U.S. governors and whether they were for making today Ronald Reagan Day. The Caller also trotted out reliable conservative talking head Grover “Not the Muppet” Norquist to remind us that President Reagan conquered high taxes, inflation, the Soviet Union and the great Martian invasion of ’86.
Given that Reagan also traded weapons with Iran in a free-the-hostages scheme, diverted money made off those weapons transfers to Contra rebels in Nicaragua (in contravention of U.S. law), lied to the American public about both events, told at least one “war story” to honored veterans that later turned out to have been taken from a movie, oversaw a presidential administration that completely gutted the nation’s environmental laws, gave weapons and aid to brutal Latin American and Asian dictators (Pinochet, Noriega, Marcos, etc.), illegally mined Nicaraguan harbors, pretended AIDS didn’t exist and deregulated the savings and loan industry (which later led to absurdly expensive government bailouts), it’s not surprising Abercrombie took a pass.
By the way, Feb. 6 was Reagan’s birthday. He would have been 102 today. How about we just celebrate his birthday the same way we do for most of the other U.S. Presidents–by going about our daily lives.
