In case you find yourself with the afternoon off today and a deep, burning desire to listen to three and a half hours of people talking about the county manager form of government, then you might want to head over to the Maui County Council chambers, located on the eighth floor of the Kalana O Maui Building in Wailuku, this afternoon at 1:30pm. The new special committee tasked with coming up with a recommendation on whether to ditch our current strong mayor form of government with one centered around a professional county manager will hold its first public meeting.
“The committee is tasked to provide the council with a written recommendation whether establishing a county manager form of government would improve management and operation of the county by June 1,” stated a Dec. 4 press release from the County Council. “If a county manager form of government is the committee’s recommendation, a Charter amendment shall also be proposed to go on the 2016 general election ballot.”
The committee has until June 1, 2016 to come up with some sort of recommendation. Should they give the county manager form of government their collective thumbs-up, then “a Charter amendment shall also be proposed to go on the 2016 general election ballot,” according to the County Council’s Dec. 4 press release.
