“There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited.”
– Fred, A Christmas Carol
Entire forests have been sacrificed to describe the joys of giving, to sum up the warm, mushy feeling that comes from altruistic acts. It’s the thing that made old Scrooge declare, after his apparition-induced epiphany: “I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy, I am as giddy as a drunken man.”
But really, all the words in the world (even ones from Dickens’s pen) are no substitute for the real thing. And so we’ve stuffed this post as full as a Christmas goose with the wish lists of local charities and non-profits whose funding, in many cases, has decreased even as the demand for services has skyrocketed.
So go ahead–give. If you’ve got a lot, give a lot; if you’ve got a little, give a little. Either way you’ll be helping someone in need, and raising your own spirits in the process. And you didn’t even need three ghosts to get there.
