UPDATE: The bad news: Na Koa lost 7-1. The good news: Maehara Stadium was packed, with a line for tickets snaking out of the parking lot at first pitch. It’s too bad the hometown nine couldn’t have put on a better display once folks actually showed up, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they made it to the championship round and posted the league’s best record in their inaugural season. Hopefully next year, fans who jumped on the bandwagon at the end will be along for the whole ride.
In last week’s By the Numbers, we noted the fact that Na Koa Ikaika Maui posted the best record in the Golden Baseball League but had the second lowest average attendance. It was their first season; people are still getting used to them. Fair enough. But now there’s really no excuse. Because the best-of-five championship series between Na Koa and the Chico Outlaws is coming to Maui, with Chico up 2-0.
That means Maui will have to win Saturday night’s game (6:35pm at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku), and the next two, to claim the title. A big crowd would go a long way toward upping the home-filed advantage factor. So come on Maui: show up, show your love. Even if you don’t care about baseball, they’ve got free bounce castles and Cool Cat burgers and other good stuff.
If you’re still not pumped up, there’s always this.
