At this week’s big award festivities in New Orleans, Louisiana, MauiTime took home a prestigious award from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the trade association we’ve been part of since 2003. It’s Third Place for best special issue in 2010, which in this case was our 3D Best of Maui edition (as seen above), which was put together by former Mauitime art director Chris Skiles and illustrator Brad Parker (click here to see the rest of the winners).
And in an added bonus, Justin “Scrappers” Morrison, our new art director (earlier this month Skiles went to work for Seattle Met), won a Second Place award for best cover design for work he did in 2010 for his former employer, Portland Mercury (click here, here and here to see his winning covers). Believe me, we are all very proud of Scrappers, but not entirely surprised. If you happen to have a bit of free time, check out his ScrappersTown website, which has links to some of the insanely cool art work he became rather famous for on the mainland. And he traded it all to come work for us, which is better than any award.
Well, maybe not a Pulitzer, but it’s pretty close.
