John Carroll is a Honolulu Republican running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Brian Schatz. A former state senator, Carroll previously ran in 2012 for the Senate seat then held by retiring Democrat Daniel Akaka, but lost in the Republican primary to former Governor Linda Lingle (Carroll got 2,900 votes, or roughly 5.9 percent).
Anyway, that was then. This is John Carroll now:
MAUITIME: What is your top priority if elected?
JOHN CARROLL: Eliminate shipping restrictions caused by Federal law which are strangling our state’s economy, agricultural production and potential for future business.
MT: What event in your life best prepared you for public office?
JC: Probably ongoing direction and guidance from my Father which started at the age of six. He lived by the following convictions:
• Never be a loafer;
• Never quit;
• Never rely on anyone to take care of something you can do yourself;
• Fully understand and practice what it means to be a Christian and practice Christian charity.
Being in the state Legislature for 10 years and working in the field of business and law for 50 years has prepared me to be a very productive U.S. Senator.
MT: Who should be the next President of the United States?
JC: Donald Trump.
MT: Which person who previously held the office you’re seeking do you hold up as a model? Why?
JC: Richard Nixon. I spent two hours with him in 1966 discussing everything from the Vietnam War to foreign trade with Russia and China. In spite of Watergate, Richard Nixon has done more to advance world peace, free trade and de-escalate nuclear warfare than anyone else. The depth and breadth of his knowledge of leadership processes have remained with me and given me a visceral understanding of where Donald Trump will take this nation in terms of international trade.
MT: What (if anything) should the U.S. Congress do to reduce gun violence?
JC: At this point, Hawaii has reasonable gun control laws. Gun control bans should never be enforced on a national level, but should be handled on a state level.
MT: What (if anything) should the nation be doing (that it isn’t already doing) to alleviate climate change?
JC: Every effort to eliminate air and water pollution should be made the highest priority in every state. During the 10 years that I was a state legislator, I was responsible for introducing all of the current environmental laws in effect today.
MT: In Strieff v Utah, the U.S. Supreme Court just ruled that police can keep evidence seized from stops made without reasonable suspicion if police find an even minor arrest warrant on the person stopped. Do you support this? Why or why not?
JC: Yes, I would support the retention of evidence seized from stops made legally. It would be grossly negligent to not seize and retain that kind of evidence.
MT: Do you support full legalization of marijuana? Why or why not?
JC: Yes, I believe that marijuana should be legalized, controlled, regulated and taxed. I believe it is way less damaging to the brain than alcohol.
