For most of us, the war in Afghanistan is at best an abstract concept and at worst forgotten entirely. Not so for the family of Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, a Hawaii-based Marine who was killed in the Helmand province this week, in an incident that is still “under investigation” according to a Defense Department release.
Seventy-eight U.S. soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, putting 2011 on pace to join 2009 and 2010 as the bloodiest years in the war’s decade-plus history.
