For nearly two decades, Kuau Mart has been a North Shore institution, serving ono grinds to locals, tourists and hungry surfers fresh off the Ho‘okipa swells. Now, its run may be coming to an end — the store’s lease is up at the end of February and a steep rent increase will likely make it impossible for the Nomura family to stay in business.
Adding a touch of color to that bleak picture, German painter Julian Vogel recently teamed up with Maui artist Lanakila Kelliher to create a vibrant mural that will, at the very least, brighten Kuau Mart’s final days. (Supporters of the store are encouraged to check out the “Save Kuau Mart” Facebook page.)
