The Wailuku Municipal Parking Structure is the county proposal that will never die. I’ve personally been reporting on its various incarnations for the last decade. The pattern has never changed: the County of Maui proposes some sort of structure to sit atop the current Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot, they get deluged with criticism from the public, and the proposal dies. This goes on every few years or so, and it’s going on again right now (for background, click here for my Jan. 8, 2015 story on the Wailuku parking situation).
On April 27, county officials called for members of the public to complete a new ReWailuku survey on the proposed Wailuku Parking and Events Facility, a sprawling new plan to build a whole lot more than a parking structure on the current Wailuku parking lot.
“The Parking Facility is intended to meet a large part of the parking demand in Wailuku Town,” states the ReWailuku website. “The [events] facility will be designed with the capability to host events such as food-truck rallies, farmer’s markets, festivals, and other outdoor events. Features such as utility hookups, solar panels (for shade and electricity), and other innovative improvements will be considered.”
More than a mere parking structure, the county hopes this new facility will “Create an activity gathering place to bring new energy and economic vitality to Downtown Wailuku” and “connect and integrate Downtown Wailuku into a unified business, commercial, and social hub,” according to the ReWailuku website.
Click here to take the survey. Those who do “will be entered to win one of three gift certificates from Native Intelligence, 808 on Main and Wailuku Coffee Company,” according to an April 27 county press release.
