It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the Superferry! The controversial superferry (useful and damaging…) is finally doing something that is hard to make a good argument against. The Superferry “Alakai” is heading from its current resting spot in VA to Haiti to help with the relief effort. “Huakai,” the second superferry that never touched Hawaiian waters, has already been sent to Haiti, and “Alakai” is to follow in short order.
Civilians will man the ship, which only makes sense considering that our forces are …busy…in the middle east. The Haiti relief effort needs all the help and use of original resources and ideas, such as the Superferry, that it can get. For instance, watch the news and notice the absence of the tents that the U.S. normally ships out in a crisis. Because, of course, our tents are with our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If our country is going to form part of an effective response to this crisis, it will be thanks to citizens, civilians, and the pooling of resources – The “Alakai” is a solid start. By: Sierra Brown
