I admit I’ve taken only one stroll along the Kealia Pond Boardwalk in South Maui since it opened last September, after a scant 15 years of planning, building and bureaucratic gear-grinding. But this week, the family and I found ourselves in Kihei with a little time to kill, and decided to give ‘er another go.
The boardwalk itself is pretty nondescript; basically what you’d expect. A few informational plaques about the local flora and fauna would be nice, but hey–at least it’s open. I’m not complaining.
Or actually, I am. About the litter. Apparently, people saw the boardwalk and thought, ‘Awesome! A new access point from which to toss bottles, plastic bags, crumpled up pieces of cardboard and used diapers.” Yes, I said used diapers.
Most of the rubbish was tossed off the side of the boardwalk, making it impossible to pick up without breaking the rules. The diaper, on the other hand, was left right on the walkway, tucked halfheartedly under a bench. So I suppose we COULD have picked it up, but…yeah. I touch my own kids’ diapers. That’s it.
In all, if you’ve got 20 minutes of free time and feel like walking on planks instead of sand, you could do worse. It’s probably a nice-ish place to watch the sunset. But people, please: if you must litter, at least make it litter that’s not full of human feces. Is that too much to ask?
