On March 15, the state Senate’s Public Safety, Government Operations and Military Affairs Committee voted in favor of a resolution that would declare February 6, 2011 Ronald Reagan Day in honor of the late president’s 100th birthday. (Maui Senator Roz Baker cast the lone dissenting vote.) We’re sure supporters are happy with how it turned out, but allow us to suggest a slight revision:
WHEREAS, after campaigning on a platform of debt reduction, President Reagan more than tripled the national deficit during his two terms; and
WHEREAS high-ranking Reagan Administration officials illegally sold weapons to Iran to fund Central American guerrillas; and
WHEREAS President Reagan didn’t publicly utter the word “AIDS” until 1987, more than five years after the epidemic began; and
WHEREAS even President Reagan’s most vaunted accomplishment—the single-handed defeat of the Soviet Union—is at best a gross exaggeration and at worst an outright fabrication,
BE IT RESOLVED that the twenty-sixth legislature of the state of Hawaii has better things to do than further fetishize one of the most overrated politicians in modern history.
