More than sixty years after the acts of heroism and sacrifice for which they’re remembered, members of the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. In an Oval Office ceremony held yesterday, President Obama signed a bill recognizing the soldiers — most of Japanese descent and many from Hawaii — who faced both extreme hardship on the battlefield and suspicion and bigotry on the homefront. In attendance was Hawaii Sen. Dan Inouye, who fought (and lost an arm) with the 442nd.
