Two Virtual Job Fairs Scheduled for Saturday, March 27th & Monday, March 29th
The award-winning MauiTime, Maui’s locally owned newspaper serving the island for the past quarter-century, temporarily shuttered its doors last summer due to the pandemic. “It’s great to be planning our relaunch,” says paper founder Tommy Russo. “Our biggest need is to hire the new staff members needed to build out our revamped newsroom, daily digital platform, and sales team.”
“In addition to the great full-time and freelance folks who will be returning, MauiTime seeks a Managing Editor, an Arts & Culture Editor, a General Assignment Reporter, at least two new sales executives, an Events Coordinator, a Production Manager, and a Graphic Designer,” says J. Sam Weiss, who is serving as a senior consultant for the relaunch. An experienced newspaper executive, Weiss publishes 8 community and alternative newspapers in Colorado.
Long-time staff members Jen Russo and Sarah Gerlach are overseeing the editorial and sales hiring. “We are thrilled that the former Maui County Environmental Coordinator, Rob Parsons, will oversee our sustainability, agriculture, and environmental beats,” says Jen Russo. “In addition to a senior Arts & Culture editor, our relaunched print and digital products will need freelancers to cover the vibrant Maui food, music, theater, and arts scene.”
“The paper and companion digital platforms will feature the most comprehensive entertainment and event calendar around, bar none,” says Calendar Editor Shan Kekahuna. “Upon our launch, we will continue to be the place to find out what is happening countywide – for locals and visitors alike.”
Senior Sales Executive Sarah Gerlach will oversee our sales hiring outreach. “We need at least two more people with the desire and skills to help local for-profit and non-profit organizations with their marketing, branding, and events initiatives,” says Gerlach.
“While past experience selling print or digital advertising would be a big plus, we can teach you that,” says Fran Zankowski, another executive helping with the re-launch. Zankowski is past president of the National Association of Alternative News Media.
“Most importantly, candidates will need to have the drive to provide our partners with cost-effective media and branding campaigns, and believe in the island’s need for great, locally engaged journalism, plus have a deep love for Maui,” adds Gerlach. “At a minimum, sales candidates should have at least a few years selling experience.”
