The drama unfolding at the Maui County Liquor Commission has apparently taken a bizarre turn, with the nine-member panel of appointees deciding at their Nov. 12 meeting to go through a normal, legal selection process to find a new Liquor Control Department director, The Maui News reported on Nov. 13.
“The commission voted Thursday to form a subcommittee to process applications that will be submitted to the full commission for final approval,” The Maui News reported. “No timeline was given as to how long the selection process would take.”
Subcommittee? Process applications? You mean, like, from people who maybe aren’t working for the LC right now? And they’re not going to just ram through some other crony in defiance of the state’s Sunshine Law, like they tried last month with Liquor Commission member Dana “Son of former LC Director Joe” Souza?
Then again, maybe the commissioners just got drunk. I’m sure they’ll sober up and be back at the usual ways by their December meeting.
