“The people of Hawai`i have a clear choice: Moving Hawai`i Forward with the Lt. Governor and me, or going back to the way things were.”
What she didn’t say:
Of all the governor’s statements that we’ve highlighted since this column began, this is by far the most brilliant. Never mind that Lingle never defines how things “were”—it’s enough to leave it to voters to imagine for themselves. Never mind that she’s vague about when things were the way they “were.” Last year? The year before? No, that couldn’t be possible because Lingle was governor then. She must be talking about life five years ago, when a Democrat sat behind the governor’s desk. But mostly, we should not question where “moving forward” will actually take us. Energy independence? Diminished homelessness? Affordable homes? Lingle’s been moving the state forward for four years and we have yet to see any of these things, so maybe they were just part of the way things were.
