Honolulu native Trisha Kehaulani Watson has been honored along with 14 others at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s 11th Annual Leadership Awards Dinner in Washington D.C. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a non-profit organization that acts as a resource for marine sanctuaries across the nation, recognized Watson for her work as the Native Hawaiian representative on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and her position as chair of the sanctuary’s first Native Hawaiian subcommittee.
“Dr. Watson has been a proactive volunteer, serving the sanctuary through her efforts to protect cultural and marine resources while ensuring that Native Hawaiian management practices are considered,” said sanctuary superintendent Malia Chow in a June 21 press release.
Watson and others like her have volunteered countless hours of community service in an effort to conserve our oceans and marine life for the benefit of future generations. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is the result of a partnership between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the State of Hawaii through the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The sanctuary works to protect humpback whales through advancements in research, education and stewardship.
