More than 10,000 people in the Philippines are feared dead from the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded (though the government puts the death toll at less than 3,000). Millions more are homeless. The devastation is beyond imagining. So here’s a list of a few non-governmental organizations–with brief notes on the organization taken directly from their websites–that are attempting to give aid:
• OXFAM – “Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations networked together in more than 90 countries, as part of a global movement for change, to build a future free from the injustice of poverty. We work directly with communities and we seek to influence the powerful to ensure that poor people can improve their lives and livelihoods and have a say in decisions that affect them.” Oxfam.org
• RED CROSS – “The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet.” Redcross.org
• NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR FILIPINO CONCERNS – “NAFCON is a national multi-issue alliance of Filipino organizations and individuals in the United States serving to protect the rights and welfare of Filipinos by fighting for social, economic, and racial justice and equality. At present, NAFCON members encompass over 23 cities in the United States.” Nafconusa.org
• UNICEF – “UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.” Unicefusa.org
• UNITED NATIONS WORLD FOOD PROGRAM – “WFP is the food aid arm of the United Nations system. Food aid is one of the many instruments that can help to promote food security, which is defined as access of all people at all times to the food needed for an active and healthy life.” Wfp.org
• SHELTERBOX – “We respond instantly following natural and other disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who need it most. Each ShelterBox supplies an extended family with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. We are now firmly established at the forefront of disaster relief and our work constantly earns the respect of outside agencies.” Shelterboxusa.org
