Say it ain’t so…
“The legislature had good justification for passing [the bills]…[but] no absolute imperative or exigent reason exists to override any of the vetoes of the bills on the list.”
– House Speaker Calvin Say, in a memo to House members posted July 2 on the Hawaii House Blog. Say had previously stated that the House wouldn’t convene a special session to override any of Gov. Lingle’s potential vetoes, including civil union bill HB444
“These measures [went] through the legislative process with significant public input. The overrides that we supported today are for bills that we and the public have debated and worked hard on. The majority of members, with their vote, believe they should go forward.”
– House Speaker Calvin Say, in a statement posted in July 2009 on the Hawaii House Blog. That year, the legislature overrode 34 of Gov. Lingle’s 53 vetoes, which included bills related to tourism research statistics and community noise limits
