If you’re going to visit or do some camping at the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park, you better take a lot to drink because we just heard that there’s no longer any drinking water there.
“Due to a leak in the main waterline in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park there is no potable water in Kipahulu for the foreseeable future,” stated a July 23 news release from Haleakala National Park officials. “The leak was discovered on Wednesday during routine inspections. Visitors should bring their own drinking water and expect intermittent closures of the main restrooms, as crews work to repair the line.”
Given the slightly dramatic use of the phrase “for the foreseeable future,” park officials can’t say when they might be able to turn on the tap again.
