Islands Hospice will open Maui’s first hospice inpatient unit this summer–less than one year after the organization began caring for patients in private homes and other residential settings including nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The new Kahului Hospice Home plans to accept its first patients by July 1.
“We are so pleased to offer this unique level of service to the Valley Isle,” said Michael Duick, MD, CEO of Islands Hospice. “We are particularly proud that we bring the first hospice facility to the residents of Maui without having relied on fundraising or the use of state and county taxpayer money.”
Duick said the majority of the healthcare community and community at large have been very supportive of the project. As a way to say thank you, Islands Hospice hosted a celebration party June 4, which was attended by medical professionals, community leaders, politicians, neighbors and other individuals who support the project.
“Since Maui has never been exposed to inpatient hospice care, we have some education to do,” Duick added.
