The Friends of Haleakala National Park is leading a service trip to Haleakala Aug. 3-5 and is looking for volunteers to join their team. The trip will be focused on the care of Waikau North Point and the protection of the native plants there. It could also include cabin upkeep and invasive plant eradication. Over the three days, volunteers will be hiking to different areas in the crater and will stay for free at Holua Cabin. There will also be some free time that can be used for photo ops, exploring and relaxing.
All team members must be able to hike in and out of the crater while carrying personal items, including a sleeping bag and food for meals. Temperatures range from 30-70 degrees Fahrenheit, so volunteers are responsible for bringing the necessary clothing, as well as the first day’s water, work clothes, boots or walking shoes and sun or rain protection. The cabin is equipped with bunks, firewood and kitchen supplies.
The Friends of Haleakala National Park is looking to make a team with a maximum of 12 people. To register for the service trip or to check out an itinerary or description of work, visit fhnp.org then contact the trip leader at christy@fhnp.org.
