Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship will expand to students studying culinary arts on the islands of Maui and Kauai starting in the 2016-2017 school year.
Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship, started by Chef Peter Merriman in 2000, has provided funds for students entering or continuing in the field of Culinary Arts on Hawaii Island. The scholarships are awarded annually based on applicant’s outstanding qualities, passion for the field and financial need. Now with Merriman’s Restaurants on Maui and Kauai, the scholarship will extend to candidates at University of Hawaii colleges on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island starting in 2016.
“It’s been our honor to help over 46 Hawaii Island students attend culinary school, something that might not have otherwise been available to them,” said Merriman. “We are excited [to] now extend this scholarship to deserving students in Maui and Kauai as well.”
Teresa Shurilla, Culinary Arts Program Coordinator at UH Maui College, said it is always beneficial for the students to have opportunities such as Merriman’s Scholarships to help them strive toward success. “We are excited to partner with Peter Merriman and Merriman’s Restaurants,” Shurilla said. “The faculty at UHMC, along with industry partners like Merriman’s, create a true atmosphere of help and support.”
To date, Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship has donated a total of $51,450 and assisted over 46 culinary students in advancing their culinary education. First and second year culinary students can apply for the 2016-2017 scholarships online at http://www.merrimanshawaii.com/culinary-scholarship/.
Applications for the 2016-2017 school year must be submitted by April 15, 2016.
