Maui’s Eliza Yoshida was among five teachers from Hawaii who were recognized by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in Washington DC last week for their work in mathematics and science teaching.
The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) was presented to outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers from across the country. The winners were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process at the state level.
The honorees from Hawaii are Yoshida from Pu`u Kukui Elementary School in Wailuku; Alicia Nakamitsu from Aiea High School; Stan Mesina from August Ahrens Elementary School; Bryan Silver from Kalani High School; and Patricia Urasky from Waimea High School.
The Hawaii teachers were among 213 individuals who traveled to Washington DC from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands).
Each awardee received a citation signed by President Barack Obama, a congressional certificate, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and a trip to Washington, DC for the award ceremony, which was held Sept. 8.
