The Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship to encourage college-bound students to use their education to benefit Maui County is now open to applicants.Josh Jerman of Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers created the scholarship program, which is now in its 11th year. The program provides academic scholarships to college-bound students who will attend a full-time program at an accredited four-year college or university.
To date, it’s awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships to Maui, Molokai and Lanai high school seniors who have displayed a passion for returning to Maui County after college to contribute to the local economy. Last year, Jerman awarded $1,000 each to three Maui County high school graduates–Tyler Pascua of Lanai High School, Takayoshi Tsutsui of Seabury Hall and Nash Wuthrich of Baldwin High School.
“I’m continuously impressed by the caliber of applicants each year—and even more impressed by those recipients who have now fulfilled the objective of the scholarship program, which is to return to Maui County as a productive member of the community,” said Jerman. “If I could give a word of advice to students: what sets a successful applicant apart from the rest is the depth and breadth of their personal essay responses.”
This year, the scholarship program will award three high school seniors $1,000 each based on their plans to contribute to Maui County’s workforce after graduation. To apply, students must be a resident of Maui County, be enrolled in a full-time program at an accredited four-year college or university for the 2015-16 academic year and demonstrate financial need. The application deadline is Feb. 20, 2015. Recipients of the award will be notified on or before March 30, 2015. Students can download application materials at Joshjermanfoundation.org.
