Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui have named Kai’a Hill and Ryan Foree the 2014 Maui School-Based Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. As mentors, Hill and Foree have had a major positive impact on their “Littles” during the 2013-2014 school year, according to the organization.
Big Sister Hill is a senior at Kamehameha School Maui Campus and has been matched with her Little Sister, Ayanna, for two years. Ayanna is an energetic child and spending time with her Big Sister has helped her to really focus that energy.
Big Brother Foree also has been matched with his Little Brother Kalema for two years. Foree, a Kamehameha School senior, is heading to college and is interested in pursuing a career in the dental field. Along with being a Big Brother, Foree works as a dental assistant. Since being matched with his Big Brother, Kalema has become more outgoing and talkative, and his teachers and mother have noted that having a mentor has made a positive big difference in his life.
The School-Based Mentoring program is unlike the traditional Community-Based Mentoring program model in which adult “Bigs” take their “Littles” on outings two to three times per month typically on a weekend. In the School-Based program, participants meet one-on-one in a classroom setting once per week with other mentors and children.
